Pug

Pugs, who were originally designed to be lap dogs, enjoy being around people.

They are quite sensitive, and while they can make wonderful apartment pets, they won't like spending a lot of time alone at home.

These puppies are playful, affectionate dogs who will get along with even inexperienced pet parents, despite having a difficult side, especially when it comes to housetraining.

This breed could be the one for you if you're seeking a lovable, laid-back friend.

Temperament

A Pug is a companion dog and they were not bred to hunt, retrieve or guard. They want all your attention and affection and they might get upset or unhappy if they don't receive it.

They are sedentary dogs that love to sit in someone's lap while they look at a movie or read a book. At the same time, they are not boring dogs at all, they can be in a playful and goofy mood to impress you with their silly tricks.

Grooming

They should be bathed every 3 to 4 weeks, you should clean their wrinkles every day (to prevent them from getting dirty in between, which could lead to infection), you should brush their coat every 1 to 3 days, you should clean their eyes every day (because they are sensitive), you should clean their ears (every week), nose, paws, and trim their nails every 6 weeks.

Some Pugs have a double coat, which means they are prone to shedding more than a Pug with one layer coat.

Pugs are well known for their face creases and wrinkles; it is a characteristic trait of this breed. And while doing so makes the

Pug appear cute and lovable, these spaces frequently remain moist and dark, providing the perfect conditions for germs and yeast to grow.

Pugs are consequently extremely prone to skin yeast infections, especially in their wrinkles and other regions like the armpits and genital region.

Because of this, it's important to keep a Pug's wrinkles clean and dry. This can be accomplished by using a fragrance-free grooming wipe to gently wipe down each skin fold.

Year-round, as long as there are no problems, most Pugs don't need any additional care for their noses. The winter and early spring, however, result in a shift in this for many Pugs.

The parched nose skin of a dog can suffer as a result of this type of dry environment.

A Pug's nose can end up raw, sensitive, dry, peeling, or even cracked. Applying a high-quality nose balm to a Pug's nose will prevent this problem. You can do this as frequently as three times per day to treat existing problems or once per week for maintenance.

Behavior with children and other pets

These are relatively relaxed dogs who don't typically engage in excessive chewing, digging, or barking.

Pugs are sturdy enough to get along with kids and typically get along well with other dogs. They appreciate social interaction and have a soft side. According to their classification, they are excellent companion animals. Since they are such dependable and stable canines, they also get along with other animals, including cats.

Health concerns

Overheating

Pugs frequently have to breathe through their mouths because of their brachycephalic breed's significantly smaller upper respiratory tract than that of other dogs.

Pugs have to exert more effort to stay cool since dogs use their airways for this purpose, making them more susceptible to overheating.

Keep your Pug safe by following these rules:

Avoid bringing your Pug outside when it's hot outside.

In hot temperatures, keep your Pug from engaging in intense exercise.

Provide consistent access to cool, clean water

Excess weight can increase breathing difficulties and make it easier for a Pug to overheat will help minimize risk.

Respiratory distress

A Pug's small airway makes them more susceptible to respiratory problems.

Your Pug will breathe more forcefully if they are anxious or upset.

Their already restricted airways further close due to this rough breathing, making it more difficult for them to breathe.

Allergies, ear infections, dental disease, eye injuries, and Legg-Calvé-Perthe Disease are all diseases that Pugs might be susceptible to.

Life expectancy

12 to 14 years
